Topper Southern’s report

Jun 15, 2022 | Junior Sailing

The Topper Southern Championships were hosted by the NYC on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of June.

As this was a bank holiday weekend and just before the start of the state exams, numbers were lower than expected however we still managed to muster a fleet of 52 Toppers.
The weather didn’t exactly play ball and with easterly winds hitting 35knts in the bay on Saturday, the decision was made to race inside the harbour. With determination, Race Officer Ed Totterdell laid the course and 2 quick races were run off with Cork sailor Liam Duggan taking the honours before the sailors went ashore in anticipation of fairer weather to follow.

Sunday saw challenging conditions again with rain and a big swell but with the wind moderating slightly and the course was set in the bay. 3 great races were completed with Ballyholme sailor Bobby Driscoll taking the honours in all 3 races and the overall series with Liam Duggan taking 2nd and Ballyholme’s Daniel Palmer taking 3rd.
Emily McAfee took the overall female and 1st junior female while local NYC sailor Ella Fitzgerald took 1st youth female. Overall a really successful weekend and great to see so many NYC Topper sailors attending their first event. Well done to all our NYC sailors Ella Fitzgerald,  James and Lizzie Hall, James Gorman, Alex Byrne, Charlie and Nicholas O’Neill and Zara Whelan.

There is a great quality gallery of pictures (our thanks to Craig O’Neill) to look at here
