 Quiz News! - The Brains of the Bay quiz season was exhumed on Wednesday 21st October, when 19 teams returned (or participated for the first time) for an exciting and pulsating quiz, which went to a tie break when Quiztopher Columbus and Answers Aweigh finished level on points. First-time participants Answers Aweigh prevailed to set up the remainder of the season as a challenge to the existing bulwarks of the Dun Laoghaire harbour intelligentsia. We welcome Answers Aweigh, Thin Quizzy, and the returning The Quizzly Bears to the quiz. In the absence of reigning Brains of the Bay Wizard, it was an opportunity for many teams to get a head start. However, seasoned campaigners Enchantress, Corner Boys, Celtic Boys and Chancellors could not make an impact, putting paid to the claim of ‘a year older, a year wiser’. Still, T.B.M. and Quiztopher Columbus kept the newbies honest. The next round is hotly anticipated.

From challenging ocean crossings and unpredictable weather to life at sea, leading a crew and the unforgettable moments of sailing around the world, Brian will share first-hand stories from one of sailing’s greatest endurance challenges.

Hosted by Damien, the evening begins with dinner, followed by an engaging conversation with Brian and a Q&A session, giving you the opportunity to hear the stories behind the adventure and put your own questions to him.

Whether you’re a passionate sailor, an ocean-racing enthusiast or simply curious about what it takes to sail around the world, this promises to be a fascinating evening of adventure, insight and inspiration.

Dinner, stories from the high seas and a chance to hear from two sailors who know what it takes to go the distance.

 Transition Year Introduction To Match Racing - As part of the waterfront transition year students activities, the National YC is offering an introduction to Match Racing on the club Eliotts. Wether you have dreams to be in the next Dublin world tour line up and battle with the best Match racers or you simply want to enjoy growing sailing skill, teamwork, rules knowledge and have great exciting fun in the process, the course is for you!

 

National YC head coach Thomas Chaix will run the sessions along with his team. 3 of the days will be dedicated to grow the necessery skills practicing starts, the course and the teamwork in delivering solid boathandling. The final day will deliver a fun and friendly competition putting all into practice... 

 

The Eliotts are perfect for Match racing. These small keelboats usually sailed with 3 onboard (sometimes 4) are highly manoeuvrerable and will challenge young sailors progressing all the necessery skills. Sailors can register as a team or individually. the coaching team will ensure everyone interested is able to sail.

Places are limited to 4 teams or 12 sailors, ideally with 4 keen skippers as we have a 4 boats operation.
 Patrick Hassett – Reporting from Europe - 
In case you missed the ‘one man and his keelboat’, that trains daily in Dun Laoghaire, I am competing in North Eastern Europe in the Autumn series of the International 2.4mR Sailing League.
The first regatta was the Czech Grand Prix on Lake Macha on the last weekend of September. There were 15 competitors from Czechia, Germany, Austria and Ukraine. The first day of the regatta was light winds largely below 5 knots. A single race was completed before the wind died altogether. The second day saw a slightly stronger breeze with Detlef Muller-Boling from Germany taking the lead. The final day saw the strongest wind with a consistent breeze of 10 knots. On the first race of the final day I managed to get myself an OCS, and finished 4th overall in addition to winning 2 races. The podium places were taken by Detlef, followed by Daniel Bina and Alexander Sadilek from Czechia.
The following weekend I participated in the German National’s in Plau am See. This regatta saw another few days of very light winds. There were 46 competitors from 7 nations including Heiko Kroger the current world champion and most importantly, Megan Pascoe made the journey from England. The light winds, even made getting to the racecourse, through the narrow sheltered river between the harbour and the lake, a challenge. The race committee squeezed in 5 races in the first 2 days, an achievement considering how light the wind was. On the 3rd day there was no racing due to insufficient wind. The podium was occupied by Christophe Tromer from Germany, followed by Megan and Heiko. I finished 16th overall. 
 Pilates – Starting Wednesday 21st October - New 6 weeks course of Pilates starting Wednesday 21st October, 7-8pm in the JB Room. 

Instructor - Rachel Browne who is also a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist in the local area.

 

The classes will be mixed ability and choreographed to the needs of those in the room.  They will be designed around sailor's needs - including core, balance work and everything needed to stay sailing fit.

€100 for the 6 week block.

 2026 F15 Frostbite - With 17 entries, the National YC Flying 15 frosbites is attracting a large fleet for 5 saturdays and 10 races before taking a well deserved winter break. The first 2 races are scheduled for Saturday , October 17th with a first gun at 13.00 and both races back to back.

If you are not racing and can help on the water on commitee boat or mark laying, please let class captain Tom Galvin or head coach Thomas Chaix know.

 ILCA Dun Laoghaire Autumn Sprint - The National Yacht Club is hosting the ILCA Dun Laoghaire Autumn sprint on October 18th.
