Calves Week 2026 – Ann Kirwan
NYC members Ann Kirwan and Brendan Briscoe raced their Schull-based Ruffian Orca II in Calves Week 2026, their 6th consecutive year to compete in the event.
Orca II was entered in the 10-boat White Sails 2 (WS2) Echo fleet with NYC Commodore Rosemary Cadogan signed up for all 4 days. They were joined by NYCâs Robin Hilliard and Nika from the Ukraine for the Fastnet race on day 2. Mike and Deirdre Buttanshaw and Annâs niece Sophie were invaluable crew on the other days.
The 80 boats racing over 6 classes were greeted with champagne sailing conditions throughout the 4 days, enjoying warm sunshine and plenty of wind for the first 3 days, especially on Wednesday for the Fastnet race.
With all classes sailing the same course for the Fastnet race (weather mark, Goat Island, Fastnet, Amelia and finish in the harbour), it was quite a sight to see the bigger boats catching up with the smaller boats as they rounded the Fastnet in a strong breeze and quite a swell.
Cassidy Completes 2,500-Mile Homecoming in 10,000-Mile Atlantic Odyssey
Dun Laoghaire sailor Frank Cassidy has completed a 2,500-mile homecoming voyage from the Canary Islands aboard his Pacific Seacraft 40 Ocean Blue, bringing to a close a three-and-a-half-year Atlantic island odyssey covering almost 10,000 miles.
The National Yacht Club's Cassidy sailed home from Lanzarote via Madeira and the Azores, completing the first part single-handed before being joined by Damian Payne for the Atlantic passage from the Azores to Ireland. The summer passage was the final chapter of a much wider adventure that began when Cassidy left DĂșn Laoghaire shortly after his retirement three-and-a-half years ago.. . . . .

Update on the ILCA WorldsÂ
The Club will be busy with the activity of the forthcoming ILCA Worlds Championships being co-hosted by the NYC and RSGYC every day from Tuesday 18th August to Saturday 12th September when competitors will be launching from the Clubâs slipway and coaches will be berthing their ribs on the Club Pontoon. All of this activity should not affect our members normal sailing from the Club and members are encouraged to visit the Club during the championships and enjoy the activity. The competitors ILCAs will be parking on the Carlisle Pier when not sailing and their coaches ribs will berth on the outer pontoons of both Clubs. The link and inner pontoons will be kept free for Club and Members use. The platform in the area between the Clubhouse and the Yardarm will be kept clear for the Opening and Closing ceremonies and for the launching trolleys of those competitors that will launch from the NYC. Members dinghies will be re located to the western side of the platform where they will be accessible for sailing. This year, the event race office will be in an office on the Carlisle Pier, but the morning coaches meetings will take place in the NYC JB room. As there will be enhanced security in the Clubs and surrounding area during the Championship period, please do bring your membership card with you.

As previously mentioned, Olympic sailing class world championships are generally only held in Europe once every 4 years and as such, this is a once in a generation opportunity for Ireland to host such a prestigious and high calibre event and the two host Clubs - the NYC and RSGYC - look forward to hosting over 400 Olympic class sailors and coaches in our Clubs, including the NYC members Finn Lynch and Annalise Murphy, over the next few weeks.

Transition Year 2026/2027 – Final Reminder
The deadline for the Expression of Interest for the TY Sailing Programme was 30 June and has passed. However, to make sure we have not missed anyone, we are opening up the application again for a brief period only.
If your TY student is interested in being part of the 2026â27 programme, we encourage you to complete the expression of interest form by the 30th of July.

Junior Regatta 2026
75 young sailors took part in the National YC junior flag regatta of the year this wednesday in Optimist, RS Feva, Topper, ILCA and Terra. The spirit of the regatta was however surely "the Fairies team" sailing the NYC RS venture just about missing climbing on the podium of the PY fleet on gear failure.
The harbour fleet saw 21 sailors battling in two fleets under the leadership of Race officer Chris Moore. 3 races were completed in a lovely 8-10 kts North Easterly breeze. In the Optimist fleet, NYC young sailor Dylan Fahy finished strongly winning the final race and the regatta ahead of RstGYC Samuel McIntyre and NYC club mate Lily Ryan who was also top girl. In the PY fleet, NYC Toppers dominated with Ebhard Blaney edging out the singing master Jack O'Donnel. Royal Irish YC Michael Lehane completed the podium on his Terra.
Out in the bay, Larry Power ran 3 races too for the more experienced sailors split into 4 fleets. The Optimist fleet was very competitive with several Irish national team sailors taking part. The RstGYC took all 3 podium spots with Louis Tricket freshly returned from France were he competed at the French summer cup on top, just about edging out Ava Molloy and Ruairi Slattery. The RS Feva was equally competitive with 8 partnerships battling for Gold. Cian Farrell and Alex Hoban from the RstGYC took the win ahead of RIYC Harvey Bellamey and Rupert Ward. Stephanie Rock and Zoe O Hare completed the podium.
The ILCA fleet was dominated by Holly Cantwell freshly returning from the Optimist world championship showing no trouble progressing into the more powerful boat. RIYC Roan Keane just about edged out NYC Liam Beirne for silver.
Finally the PY fleet showed a good mix of dinghies.
It was to be the 29ers making the most of the conditions with George Julian O Leary and Dillon Kennedy edging out club mates Dan Moran and Jamie Keegan. The podium was completed by NYC Dylan Hall sailing his Topper.
The regatta concluded with the traditional BBQ and the awaited and well deserved ice cream courtesy of Haagen Dazs before presenting the 2026 podiums.
Sunshine, smiles, gentle breeze... All the ingredients were in place for an amazing 2026 regatta!
Next on the junior harbour racing: The Royal Irish junior regatta next Wednesday and of course the NYC junior September series starting mid Sepetember this year.
