Covid 19 Update

Covid 19 Update

Dear Members

Following the Government’s announcement of mandatory measures, the boathouse was closed with immediate effect last Friday evening and services are suspended for the foreseeable future.

Lift-in is postponed pending confirmation of a new date. We would also ask that you refrain from working on your boats or using your dinghies at this time until further notice.

The Clubhouse remains closed but security is maintained, including on the platform, day and night.

The following NYC staff are available via email to take your queries as follows:

Membership/General enquiries / Accounts: secretary@nyc.ie
Sailing and Boathouse Services: sailing@nyc.ie

We wish you and your families well and that you stay safe.

NYC wins Irish Sailing Sustainability Award 2019

NYC wins Irish Sailing Sustainability Award 2019

Our Club won the accolade of Irish Sailing last Saturday in recognition of its efforts in promoting sustainability and clean seas throughout its activities and events.

For memory:

  • The National Yacht Club was Ireland’s first Club with a Sea Bin – thanks to Twelve-year-old environmental campaigner Flossie Donnelly (see here and here)
  • In July, the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta (and all its stakeholder Clubs) was awarded Gold Level Clean Regatta Certification
  • In August, the inaugural Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm Regatta hosted by the NYC was, as a first for any Club in Ireland, award Platinum level
  • In September, the Subaru Flying Fifteen World Championships Regatta was also award Gold Certification

We would like to thank all involved in achieving these milestones, and especially Grainne Ryan for spearheading the Sustainability efforts in the Club.

NYC contenders for tomorrow night’s Sailing Ireland Awards ceremony

NYC contenders for tomorrow night’s Sailing Ireland Awards ceremony

Sailing Ireland have had to cancel their Annual Conference scheduled for tomorrow         (March 21st) due to Covid 19, but by innovative use of new technology they will proceed with their Annual Awards ceremony – the last to be hosted by outgoing Sailing Ireland President, our own Jack Roy.

It will be a wholly on line event, accessible on the Sailing Ireland Facebook Page at 18.30 (https://www.facebook.com/IrishSailingAssociation/)

The National YC has three nominees for the Sailor of the Year and the Club itself is a contender for the 2019 Sustainability Awards and the 2019 Inclusion Award. Read More Here

All Organised Sailing Activity to Cease with Immediate Effect – Irish Sailing

All Organised Sailing Activity to Cease with Immediate Effect – Irish Sailing

Since the guidelines issued by An Taoiseach last Thursday, Irish Sailing has been in discussions with a number of stakeholders from both competitive and training backgrounds, and have concluded that social distancing is not only difficult to achieve onshore from an organisers’ perspective but also difficult to achieve at a personal level on the water.

For double handers and/or keelboats requiring two or more crew, it is not possible. Even for organised activities involving single-handers requiring safety cover (with two people in the safety boat), it is not achievable.

For this reason, Irish Sailing advises that all organised sailing activity should cease with immediate effect and will be reviewed on 29th March

NYC Members can still use their boats and go sailing in a private, non-group organised, capacity. However, the changing rooms are not to be used and we remind all our Members to keep observing the HSE guidelines on social distancing among themselves and with the Boathouse staff.

We will continue to monitor Government announcements and update the advice accordingly.

Thanking you for your cooperation.

Change of date for keelboats lift-in now scheduled for Saturday 11th April

Change of date for keelboats lift-in now scheduled for Saturday 11th April

We have decided to reschedule the lift-in back to its ‘normal’ mid-April weekend (eg back by one week) to Saturday 11th April.

The lift-in had been brought forward by a week to Saturday 4th April as the 11th was during the Easter bank holiday weekend and we were anticipating that some boat owners might be away

However:

  • The weather has been very poor since Christmas and we think the additional time to prepare for the sailing season will be welcomed by owners
  • We don’t think that many people will make travel arrangements over Easter or go on with previously made arrangements

If rescheduling the lift-in poses a problem to you, please contact sailing@nyc.ie

Covid 19 – UPDATE

Covid 19 – UPDATE

Dear Fellow Members,

The safety of the Staff and Members of the Club remain the top priority of the Committee and Management of the Club.  In line with the directive last night from the Dept of Health, we will be closing catering in the Club, effective immediately.   This includes the bar and the closure will continue for the foreseeable future.

For Clarity, there will be access to boats on the Platform and the Boathouse and Sailing activities will continue, in compliance with the Covid19 regulations.  The office will remain in operation and can be contacted by phone or Email only (01 280 5725 / secretary@nyc.ie.  Access to the Club will be by the front side entrance, as the upstairs and the front door will be locked.

The welfare of our staff is a top priority and we are doing everything we can to minimize the impact of the closure on them.  We will be utilising suitably trained staff members to affect Spring Cleaning and ramping up of the winter club maintenance program.

We would encourage members to keep in touch with fellow club members, especially those who might benefit from assistance with shopping, reading material and other items.  We will respond as necessary to the evolving situation and we hope that Lift In can proceed on April 11th.

Stay safe and look out for your neighbours and fellow members.

Commodore Martin McCarthy and Committee
