Members End of Season Race
NYC Membersâ End-of-Summer Charity Race, Thursday 9th September
We have a busy weekend coming up for the club hosting the ICRA National Championships this week from Friday to Sunday, with visiting boats arriving to our pontoon on Thursday.
Preparations are underway with Race Officer Larry Power to hold our annual End-of-Summer Season Charity Race next week on Thursday 9th September. The start will at the DBSC Hut on the West Pier, and signals will commence at 18:00 to allow for the shorter evening. Further details will be posted later.
It will be a welcome return for this event after missing out last year due to the Covid-related late start to the 2020 racing season. That in turn lead to the DBSC midweek series running until September 10th, and then there was an abrupt end to racing the following week when Covid-restrictions were re-imposed by the government.
Topper National Championships – NYC Report
This yearâs Irish Topper National Championships was hosted by Carrickfergus Sailing Club on the north shore of Belfast Lough from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd of August. The 56 competitors across the 2 fleets battled in challenging conditions from very little wind to a gusty 18 knot breeze, persistent rain, and a choppy sea. Daniel Palmer from Ballyholme sailed consistently well over the 9-race series taking the overall title. Flying the flag for NYC was Ella Fitzgerald who had mixed fortunes, having led the first race from the start completely ran out of wind within touching distance of the line dropping back 6 places. Gear failure brought the second race to a premature end, but a series of top 10 finishes secured her the overall prize for 2nd youth girl.

This yearâs Irish Laser National Championships was hosted by Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven, Cork from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd of August. The 88 competitors across the 3 fleets battled in challenging conditions from very strong winds of 35 knots+ which almost flattened the fleet on Friday and racing was abandoned to no wind at all where racing had to be cancelled on the final day. The fleet managed 8 races in total which gave sailors one discard.

The dates for the upcoming DBSC September Junior Series are as follows:

We are taking a break on 5th September due to the hosting of the ICRA Nationals in the NYC and of an Optimist Class event on 4th and 5th September in the RSGYC.
There will be 3 races back to back inside the harbour each Sunday, first gun at 2pm. Prize giving and food for competitors will take place in NYC on last Sunday of series. Winners of each fleet will be invited to attend the annual DBSC prize giving in RStGYC where they will be awarded one of the DBSC perpetual prizes.
This series is a great way to stretch out the summer and practice racing skills learnt during the summer in a safe and fun environment.
We will be looking for parent volunteers to help on and off the water each Sunday. You can volunteer for your Club (DMYC, RIYC, RSGYC, NYC) using the entry form below, otherwise if you have any questions please contact Sarah Gorman.

Laser 4.7 Worlds wrap up
Latvian and Italian sailors were crowned ILCA Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships at DĂșn Laoghaire Harbour on Saturday following a week-long competition on Dublin Bay.
More than 230 competitors representing 31 countries competed in the largest international sporting event taking place in Ireland this year.
