ICRA National Conference and AGM – Register Now – Online 6th March 2021
ICRA is delighted to welcome Evelyn Cusak (Head of Forecasting, Met Eireann) to speak at the 2021 ICRA National Conference.
Given the COVID restrictions currently in place, ICRA will hold its annual Conference and AGM online on Saturday 6th March from 10:30 to 13:00.
The event will naturally be shorter this year due to being online, however we are delighted that the Conference will have a number of experts offering advice on all aspects of racing and yacht preparation, and will be followed by the AGM.
The 2020 Annual Conference will feature:
âą Evelyn Cusack (Head of Forecasting, Met Eireann) - we are delighted to have Evelyn Cusack kick-off the conference covering the topic of âWeather Forecastingâ, a critical element of all sailing activities and competitions. Following the bad weather meaning she was unable to attend last year!
âą Latest Yacht Design â a presentation from leading Irish Yacht designer Mark Mills.
âą Major Event Reps â giving you the low down on what to expect at the major cruiser racing coastal and offshore sailing events planned for 2021, and plans for coping with the Covid 19 situation.
âą Sailors Forum â giving members a chance to ask questions of the event organisers to help them plan for the season ahead.
âą ICRA Updates â on the Under 25 Programme, the Central results database, ECHO rules, plans for the ICRA Nationals in 2021.

Junior Summer Courses 2021 – Update
The National Yacht Club are making preparations to run clinics for our junior members from June until August 2021. Last year we learnt how to deal with Covid 19 and provided successful clinics for all of our young members. We have learnt a lot and plan to do things much better this year.
We plan to offer clinics in start sailing, basic skills, improving skills, advanced boat handling, start racing, kites and wires (using club wayfarers and ventures), team racing (using our club fireflies), feva clinics and adventure clinics. We also plan to run optimist and laser racing clinics with our advanced racing coaches throughout the summer.
We will have optimists, toppers and FEVAs to charter for members who want to try out a different boat over the summer.
We will keep you updated, but please be reassured that we are planning a wonderful summer for you all at the National Yacht Club.
Registration and dates of summer sailing courses will be found on the website shortly, so keep an eye on the website.

The challenge consist of 25 questions in increasing order of difficulty.
After you complete the challenge, you will be able to see the Leaderboard and will receive an email with your score and a link to download all the answers for you to study in your own time.
As this is a challenge with a leaderboard, it would obviously be unfair to complete it more than once...so there is a built in IT mechanism to check for unique submission but we do ask all competitors to be fair and take part only once.

Irish Sailing Awards – from Harry Hermon, CEO Irish Sailing
Dear All
As you know, the 2020 Irish Sailing Awards are taking place online, but this year with a much more vibrant format . And while we may not be able to get together in person, thereâs still much to celebrate and Iâd like to encourage you and your members to register and join us next Thursday 11 February at 7.00pm.
MC Justin Cullen of Skerries Sailing Club will steer us through the night, with interviews and chats with nominees and winners. Weâll have the usual categories like Senior Instructor of the Year, along with Training Centre of the Year, and Sailor of the Year. Weâll also be giving the Sustainability Award for those making a difference to the environment, the all-important Inclusion Award to someone pushing innovation and access, and the Youth Sailor Award for the fantastic young sailors who represent Ireland on the international stage. But weâll also have a new Leadership Award for someone with a long-term vision, and the re-introduced Volunteer of the Year which received dozens of nominations from everyone around the country.
Itâs important that this year the Awards focus on the good news that came out of 2020. It was a difficult year for so many, but we want to shine a light on the remarkable stories of people who made a difference â people who achieved extraordinary things despite setbacks, created communities in a time of loneliness, made sure that the more vulnerable in our society were looked after, and those who went the extra mile to make sure many of us got out on the water safely. As they say, not all superheroes wear capes.
The awards present the perfect opportunity to show that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we were able to return to the water in a variety of different ways, and we hope to mark the end of a strange and difficult year with an optimistic eye on the future.

ICC Refresher Course for NYC Members with Wild West Sailing
Wild West Sailing, who is currently running a Small Boat Coastal Navigation Course to our NYC Members organised by Women on the Water, has agreed to run an ICC refresher Online Course for all NYC Members.
Please note: This ICC Navigation Refresher course is only suitable for anyone who has previously attended a formal navigation course.
Assessments can be organised in Dun Laoghaire or in Sligo.
Anyone else intending on being assessed for their ICC, need to do a formal navigation course at least to the level of Day Skipper.
The course runs over 4 Wednesday evenings, 1800 - 2130, starting Wednesday 17th February and will cover:
1. Buoyage & Pilotage
2. IRPCS (Col. Regs)
3. Chartwork, Position Fixing & Tidal Streams
4. Mock exam

RYA Day Skipper Navigation Online Course with Wild West Sailing
Wild West Sailing, who is currently running a Small Boat Coastal Navigation Course to our NYC Members organised by Women on the Water, plans to run an RYA Day Skipper Navigation // via ZOOM.
This is a great opportunity to extend your knowledge of navigation skills during this current lock-down.

6 NYC Members nominated for Irish Sailing Volunteer of the Year Award!
The National Yacht Club has no less than four members nominated for the Irish Sailing Volunteer of the Year Award 2020: Rosemary Cadogan, Mal Nowlan, Mairead Ni Cheallachain, Jack Roy, Peter Ryan and Dara Totterdell. The winner will be announced at the 2020 Virtual Irish Sailing Awards taking place on Thursday 11 February at 7pm.
Irish Sailing is proud to host the 2020 Virtual Irish Sailing Awards which bring together (online) members and supporters of sailing to celebrate and pay tribute to some of the outstanding contributors to our sports throughout the year. Like last year, IS is having a virtual celebration to ensure they keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible.
