The National Yacht Club is delighted to announce that it has once again been selected to host the Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm Regatta. The weekend of 29-30 August 2020 will see the return of this prestigious event to the NYC.
The inaugural event held earlier this year was an outstanding success with over 200 women participating in the first regatta on a national level to celebrate women’s participation in sailing. Feedback from participants and their supporters was very positive and strong media coverage highlighted the event, and it’s objectives, to an audience beyond the sailing fraternity. The 2019 event was also awarded the Platinum Clean Regattas Award by Sailors for the Sea, their highest possible award for sustainability.
The objective of Women at the Helm is to encourage women to move from shore to boat, crew to helm and club to regional event and generally to take on leadership roles in sailing.
The event is open to PY, dinghy’s and keelboat’s racing from teens to seniors. Men are welcome to participate but crews must be 50% female and all boats must be helmed by women.
The NYC has been at the forefront of developing Women on the Water initiatives. NYC Ladies Sailing now has a membership of over 50 keen sailors and the return of Women at the Helm for a further hosting is an endorsement of the efforts of the Club to support women’s sailing.
The objective for 2020 will be to build on the success of the inaugural event by increasing participation – and awareness of the opportunities open to women sailors.
