The news that Irelandâs 2016 Rio Olympics silver medal-winner, sailor Annalise Murphy, has been selected to represent Ireland in the Laser Radial class at the forthcoming 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo has been warmly welcomed by the National Yacht Club and her long term sponsor, Mercedes-Benz.
Following the further easing of restrictions announced by the Government going into Phase II of deconfinement, Irish Sailing has published detailed FAQs on what does it mean for our sport and hobby.
Last Saturdayâs Lift-in was a vital exercise along the road to recovery for us as a Club â but also for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown as a borough.
A broad section of our membership contributed greatly to making this Covid Lift-In a success - some by staying away and many by helping with the detailed planning for the day, communicating with members and then undertaking the actual Lift-In.
No one played a greater role than Alan Turner, who besides leading the Lift-In as Boathouse Captain is also Covid19 Compliance Officer for the Club. That is besides reopening a motor dealership earlier in the week! Olivier and the boathouse staff, Stephen, Wayne and Sam ensured everyone knew well in advance of the plan and protocols, while the 20 volunteersâ members from a number of families effected the Lift-In. To the Shanahan Family, the Horgan Ryan Family, The Meldon Family, the Quinn family, the Byrne family and others, thank you most sincerely.
They assembled at 5.30 am and stayed on station until the last boats dropped safely into the water at 4pm.
Following the Government's "Roadmap for reopening society and business" and after consultation with stakeholders and Category 1 Clubs, Irish Sailing has published its 'Return to Sailing' Scheme
Harry Hermon, CEO of Irish Sailing says:
The Phase 1 Guidelines from the âReturn to Sailingâ Scheme are designed to support clubs, centres and members to put measures in place that will allow the safe return to our sports on a gradual basis, subject to the lifting of the Coastguardâs current advisory notice.
The Return to Sailing Scheme Phase 1 includes three sections:
1. 4 x fundamental principles that will affect the decision to go afloat:
Compliance with current COVID 19 restrictions
Personal responsibility â for your own safety and compliance
Self-help - alternative means of safely returning to shore
Risk Assessment â assisting the decision-making process
2. Guidelines for a safe return to our sports in Phase 1 (starting on 18 May)
3. A Risk Assessment template for organisations.
Other supports will be published soon, including a FAQ section on our website, and a âSafety Testingâ document which will give more practical tips on safely returning to your boat. The government also published their own Return to Work protocol which we will be referencing https://dbei.gov.ie/en/Publications/Return-to-Work-Safely-Protocol.html
We continue to work with Sport Ireland on guidelines for Phase 2 and beyond, with the hope that travel restrictions may be reviewed, and multi-household groups be allowed to convene. In the meantime, by working together and using these Phase 1 principles and guidelines sensibly and responsibly, we can make sure that our return to the water is safe for all.

With the government announcement last week of the phased plan to relax restrictions, we can begin preparing for a resumption of sailing activity in accordance with the phases of that plan. The National Yacht Club has now cancelled its special 150th anniversary Regatta originally scheduled for the 10th to the 13th of June.
The National Yacht Club will be working with the other Dun Laoghaire waterfront clubs to put on the 'Dun Laoghaire Combined Clubs Solidarity Regatta 2020â planned for 31st July to 3rd August if circumstances allow, and with a fallback Plan B date of September 5/6 also in the Irish Sailing / DBSC diary.
Cormac will be back in the kitchen on Thursday 14th May @ 4pm. If you would like to cook along with him here are the following ingredients you will need to make the NYC's legendary Pate Maison and our Baked Hake with a herb crust.
