Quiz update

Every dog has his day. In the case of the Corner Boys, during Wednesday’s table quiz (29 January), they barked loudest and bagged the bone. following a tie-break with T.B.M. The Corner Boys’ tails could be seen wagging furiously, and at least one Corner Boy extended the metaphor by sniffing in inappropriate places. This was T.B.M.’s fourth 2^nd-place finish, and their second tie-break defeat. A victory must await. Perennial contenders Wizard tied with Chancellors for third, with Teamtastic and Tango putting in good performances to finish close up in fifth and sixth respectively.

Wednesday night’s quiz was the last of the ordinary season, with discards being available from now on. Reigning champions Wizard continue to dominate the overall leaderboard, with T.B.M. and the Corner Boys improving their standing. Expect the competition to heat up in the coming weeks.

Our next quiz will take place on February 12 at 8pm sharp!  All members are welcome to attend and compete – each quiz night is a standalone event. Questions, and sometimes answers, guaranteed.

Quiz update

Whether sailing or rugby, The Dirty Ruckers know how to play until the final whistle. Having taken an early lead during the Christmas dinner quiz held on Wednesday 11 December, The Dirty Ruckers relinquished that lead to the tournament favourites Wizard only for the latter to drop the ball/miss a tack just before the line, whereupon The Dirty Ruckers (led by former Eurovision winner Cheryl Baker) took advantage to win a maiden victory, to much well-deserved applause. Wizard and perennial also-rans the Corner Boys tied for 2^nd, and Harmerang continued their recent return to form coming 4^th.

The overall Leaderboard shows Wizard leading T.B.M. and The Dirty Ruckers with other teams starting to eye up their potential discards to make it competitive. An interesting new year awaits!

The Leonard family would like to express their gratitude for the generosity of all quizzers who contributed to the fundraising for Hannah Leonard, whose terrible accident has touched so many in the sailing community and beyond. In the meantime, the Quizmaster would like to thanks all teams for their continued enthusiastic participation, to thank Sara and Michael for their organisation, and to thank the staff of the NYC for their assistance and patience. The Quizmaster

Wednesday’s quiz had a familiar look with team T.B.M. trying to fend off an onslaught from Wizards and Enchantresses and Chancellors and Grasshoppers. In the end, however, the rational, secular, enlightened and methodical T.B.M. had to give way to the mystery and magic that weaves a spell around our reigning champions Wizard. Following a tense tiebreak between the two top teams, Wizard won through being the least disconcerted by the erratic questions of the quizmaster, and take home the weekly prize. Special mention should go to Grasshopper for a much improved performance, and to F-fifteen (who will be henceforth referred to as F-15) for a strong maiden performance. Our previous victors must have been tripping the light Teamtastic, as they suffered a severe hangover to sink back into the pack.

The overall Leaderboard shows T.B.M. with a lead over Wizard after four rounds. Enchantress, Teamtastic and The Dirty Ruckers occupy the next spots. In one sense, because there is the possibility of 4 discards, all teams are level at this stage. Let that thought keep you all warm until our next quiz on the 11^th December. This is the Christmas dinner quiz, and all are welcome to join us for dining at 7.30 (quiz will start at 8.30 sharp-ish).

Quiz update:

As a test, the Quizmaster asked ChatGPT the questions that had been posed to the teams at the NYC quiz on Wednesday, 30^th October. From this experiment, the conclusion can be drawn that some of the teams are no less intelligent than the artificial kind. And ChatGPT spilled its drink.

On Wednesday, a tight tussle that featured different leaders at different stages, eventually saw The Corner Boys arrive back in the bigtime, pipping perennial performers Wizard by a point, with the novices Quiztopher Columbus an encouraging third. Chancellors, who floated to the front first, finished fourth. The peloton was well grouped in behind, although horizon scanners spotted commodore-to-be Frank Cassidy somewhat adrift in his Cruising for a Bruising. Pull your oar out Frank!

As a post-script, Michael and Sara are consulting with the Quizmaster regarding the first quiz of the season. Although the result on the night stands, the allocation of points in the Overall Leaderboard table may be adjusted. Watch this space.

The next quiz will take place on Wednesday, 13^th November. All are welcome to attend and participate, and we encourage all teams to be there and ready to go by 8pm sharp!

Quiz update

New year, new competition, new quizmaster – same result.

Congratulations to team Wizard who have kicked off their campaign for a ‘three-peat’ with a win in the first quiz of the Brains of the Bay series. Wizard pipped the other form teams from last year, Enchantress and T.B.M., by a single point. Good early performances also came in from The Dirty Ruckers, Teamtastic, and All At Sea.

The quiz was well-attended with 20 teams packing out the dining room. Thanks to Patrick Madigan for taking the microphone – he has been assured that his portrait will be hung in the gallery of venerable quizmasters.

The next quiz will take place on Wednesday 30^th October at 8pm sharp! All members are welcome to attend and participate for a fun evening of only-sometimes-difficult questions.
