Quiz Update – Brains Of The Bay

Quiz Update – Brains Of The Bay

The boats are lifted out. Dark evenings confine the spirit. Sailors loosen the shrouds. And the blinds go down on the NYC like the drooping eyelids of a soon to be hibernating giant. Does anything stir through the short winter days and cold winter nights?

You bet it does! Anyone present at the NYC quiz nights from October through to March would feel the thumping heart of a giant that is racing inside. 22 teams. 11 quizzes. Over 1,300 competitors. About 600 questions. And a suspenseful, dramatic, and epic finale that brought the Brains of the Bay down to one, single, isolated, straightforward question. Could you answer it?

Well Patrick Madigan’s Corner Boys could. Going toe-to-toe with Páid Cassidy’s Wizard into the last night, both of these teams had a chance to be the winning-most team in the Quiz’s 40-year history. If either team won last Wednesday (26 March), then they would be the Brains of the Bay champions. At the end of evening, there were two teams tied for the lead – and it will not surprise you to learn that it was Wizard and the Corner Boys who made that tie. A tie that had to be broken. Four questions later, there was no give: still tied. 2-2 in the tiebreak. Last Question. One Question. One answer. One trophy. One Champion. And one place in history. A tremendous cheer of commiseration for the vanquished champions Wizard. A louder cheer of congratulations for the new champions Corner Boys. Even the Commodore got in on the act and presented the trophy (see pic). A late night. A great night. The beating heart of the sleeping club.

The giant stirs. Sailors appear on the yard. Spring kicks the hour forward. Soon, a swarm of insect-like boats will spew into the bay. One of them could perhaps yet be the youngest Olympic gold medallist.

Quiz update

Following the quiz on Wednesday night (12 March), everything is poised for an epic finish to the season when the final quiz takes place in two weeks. On Wednesday, the Corner Boys took a commanding lead after the forewarned round on academy awards, and never looked back. Reigning champions Wizard took second place to set up a clash for the ages when the quiz goes down to the wire. The other places went to Enchantress, Teamtastic and T.B.M., for each of whom the ambition of capturing the Brains of the Bay trophy must now be extinguished.

Wizard retain their top spot in the overall Leaderboard (below), but with the impact of discards, the competition is set up for a show-down. For Wizard and the Corner Boys in two weeks’ time, “if you win, you win!”. The Quizmaster, when contacted in their winter residence in Morocco, sent congratulations to the Corner Boys, but was reluctant to call the winner next week: “I have always felt that it would be close over the final weeks”, she (or he) said. “Wizard and the Corner Boys are former Brains of the Bay champions, so they know what it takes to stay in the fight over a full season. For the final quiz, I will set the questions to be as fair as possible, so it is difficult to know who will win out”. “I think,” she (or he) said, somewhat bluntly, “that luck may a play a part in the final destination of the trophy. I wish all teams the best for the final.”

Editor adds: If, at the final quiz, either Wizard or the Corner Boys win on the night, they will finish top of the Overall Leaderboard and win the Brains of the Bay. If the Corner Boys finish second on the night, and Wizard finish no better than second, both teams will be tied on the Overall Leaderboard. In that event, there will be a play-off round to determine the Brains of the Bay champion. A play-off round will comprise 5 questions.

The final quiz on Wednesday 26 March is a dinner-quiz (7.00 for 7.30) with the quiz starting at 8.30, after which the Commodore will present the Brains of the Bay trophy to the winners. All are welcome to participate. For those teams intending to dine, please let the Club know in advance, so that they can cater for numbers.
