Our Sailors Take On Mighty Challenges Across the World

Our Sailors Take On Mighty Challenges Across the World

This month, National Yacht Club members are making waves on the global stage. From the Clipper Round the World Race to the Mini Transat and La Solitaire du Figaro, our sailors are proudly representing the club.

Damian Payne (@teampowerofseattlesports ) and Brian Uniacke (@team.tongyeong.clipperrace ) have set sail on the first leg of the Clipper Round the World Race.

This Sunday, Tom Dolan (@tomdolanskipper ) begins his defence of the La Solitaire du Figaro title.

Later this month, Mark O’Connor (@marksmini650 ) will embark on his solo Mini Transat adventure.

Everyone at the National Yacht Club wishes them fair winds, safe passage, and every success.
Please give them a follow and show your support as they take on these incredible challenges!

World Match Racing Tour – Accommodation Help

World Match Racing Tour – Accommodation Help

As some of you may know, we are hosting a stage on the World Match Racing Tour this September, and preparations are well underway. We are reaching out to ask for your help with one important part of the event: accommodation for the visiting teams.

The regatta runs from the 24th to the 28th of September, with a practice day on the 24th. Teams will be arriving on the 23rd or 24th, and most will leave either on the evening of the 28th or the 29th, depending on flights. Nearly all the teams have been in touch looking for recommendations, and many are struggling with the high cost of accommodation in Dublin.

We would be enormously grateful if any members could offer a place to stay for visiting sailors. This doesn’t need to be anything glamorous—anything from a spare room, a space for a blow-up mattress, or even a berth on a boat in the marina would make a huge difference. The aim is to make this a positive and welcoming experience for the teams, which in turn will help ensure that the National Yacht Club remains a stop on the tour in the future.

If you are able to help, please let us know at your earliest convenience. Your support will go a long way toward making this event a success, and it will be very much appreciated by both the club and the visiting teams.

Please contact Oisin Cullen omc2607@gmail.com if you can office any assistance.

National Yacht Club Women on the Water Dinghy Race Day

National Yacht Club Women on the Water Dinghy Race Day

The National Yacht Club Women on the Water Dinghy Race Day took place in glorious sunshine in Dun Laoghaire harbour on Sunday August 17th. After a briefing ashore, the 21 competitors set about rigging the fleet of National Yacht Club fireflies, toppers and optimists, and heading out on the water.

Race Officer Ed Totterdell, set a triangular course with the start line just west of the Carlisle pier and the weather mark towards the bandstand, and ran a series of 14 races.

Crews swapped around and the competitors got to sail in several different classes. A few people who had said they would sail in a firefly and a topper but “definitely not an optimist”, ended up giving it a go and enjoying the experience. Others said they would be comfortable crewing but not helming or racing single handed, but after a few races they gained enough confidence to try a topper or an oppie, recording their first solo helming experience.
