The Davy National Yacht Club Junior Regatta was held last week with blue skies, fair winds and plenty of sunshine. There were 101 boats registered with 119 sailors from across all the waterfront clubs. It was our first full regatta since Covid and the stars aligned for us on the day.
Registration went like clockwork thanks to Sandra Moore and Henrietta O’Regan, and the sailors were delighted with their goody bags where they got sun caps and water bottles thanks to Davy and really important on such a hot day.
The club welcomed its juniors with a special playlist to get everyone in the spirit.
After the briefing by our Race Officers Chris Moore and Alan Balfe, our safety officers Alan Daly and Fiona Feguson gave their briefings.
All launched smoothly thanks to Gavin Denn, Louise Reeser on slip and Rebecca Hall our Beachmaster.
On the water there was great competitive sailing and you can see the great action shots taken by Michael Chester of our sailors on the water.
Our Harbour fleet were made up of many sailors for whom this was their first event and they did extremely well and it was great to see so many NYC sailors out participating 47 in total across both fleets.
After racing, there was a fun atmosphere as junior sailors from across the clubs gathered to enjoy a delicious NYC bbq. There was also a Teddy’s ice cream for all the sailors and instructors, which was very popular on such a sunny day.
The Prizegiving followed and our Commodore Conor O’Regan presented the prizes with Sue O’Herlihy from Davys.
Thanks to Henrietta O’Regan and Sandra Moore for compiling all the results.
The National Yacht Club did very well with Louis Trickett getting a 4th and best NYC sailor and Michael Hanley getting a 7th place in the Harbour Fleet in the optimist class In the Main Fleet In the Laser Fleet Mathew Lawless came 2nd, in the Topper Fleet Lizzie Hall came 2nd and Charlie O’Neill 3rd .
In the PY Fleet Hugh Meagher and Alexander Trickett came 1st and Edward Dempsey and James Walsh came 2nd.
In the RS Feva Fleet James Hall and Cathal O’Regan came 2nd.
In the Optimist Fleet James Gorman came 4th and best NYC optimist sailor and Jamie Kirrane came 7th.
There were also some fun prizes to the delight of the recipients.
The celebrations continued into the night as the junior sailors had a Hawaiian themed disco in the JB Room with our own Alexander Trickett as the DJ. This was also well attended by all the waterfront clubs. Whilst the children danced the parents had dinner on the balcony a win win for all.
Thanks to all the volunteers without whom none of this could have happened, and Davy for kindly supporting the event.
A special thanks to our great team of instructors led by Nicola Feguson our SI who helped out with the organising, registration, bag packing, and safety on the day and led the boogieing at the disco the cha cha slide being a favourite.
Thanks to Olivier and his team for all their support and help in the run up to the day and on the day itself.
Thanks to John, Cormac and all the staff at the yacht club for all their support and enthusiasm for the Juniors.
A big thank you to Oonagh and Louise who helped out all the support from the office and to Ronan Verling our Summer course coordinator.
Thanks to Michael Chester for his great photos both on and off the water. A special thanks also to Georgina Connellan who was a great support on the day with our brave Regatta sailors.
The biggest thank you is to all our Junior sailors who competed in the event and are the future of our club and it was clear on the day that our future is safe.
