NYC Compete in the Volvo Gill Optimist Open National Championships August 2019
Last week we saw many Irish Optimist sailors compete in the Volvo Gill Optimist British Nationals and Open Championships held in Weymouth. 5 NYC Optimist sailors participated in a challenging and fun filled 6 day event.
Luke Turvy and Fiachra McDonnell were amongst the top 10 senior sailors in Gold Fleet. Both sailors with many bullets throughout the event. Luke Turvy 8th, Fiachra McDonnell 9th and Lauren O Callaghan 50th overall in senior Gold Fleet.
Ava Ennis and Caoilinn McDonnell joined the IODAI Under 12s squad competing in junior fleet. Caoilinn McDonnell 50th junior gold and Ava Ennis 4th junior silver. Ava Ennis also had many top 10s including a bullet on the last day. Many congratulations to all our NYC Optimist sailors keep up the great work.

New Firefly’s at the NYC
After members fundraising and a "Sports Capital" grant your club has acquired six Firefly dinghies to introduce team racing in the club. The NYC was to the fore in Team Racing many years ago, see the brass IYA medals on the wall in dining room by the fireplace.
The six boats, 3 blue and 3 orange will provide access for members for team racing, watch this space for information on our team racing programme.
Update on the Laser Radial Youth World Championships
Congratulations to NYC member Clare Gorman, who has just finished 5th overall at the Laser Radial Youth World Championships in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

The club intends to provide two days of pre-event coaching ahead of the Optimist Nationals, run from Howth Yacht Club, for Main Fleet sailors.
- Monday 12th August and Tuesday 13th August.
- Cost - âŹ70
- Times 9:30am-4:30pm
- Max number 8
- Please register by Tuesday 6th August
- This program is not open to sailors in the âRegatta Fleetâ, as they receive coaching from IODAI.

Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm Regatta – 17th & 18th August
The National Yacht Club are delighted to host the first Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm regatta, taking place on 17 & 18 August. Around the country, women have been racing against each other for decades but this is the first time a regatta will be held at a national level. The Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm regatta is an opportunity for women to set a new goal and encourage a move from shore to boat, crew to helm or club event to regional event. Female helms currently stand out - letâs change that and encourage women to take the helm.
