Colin Morehead & Martin McCarthy are Sailors of the Month for August
It is unusual to have two leading figures sharing the "Sailor of the Month (Services to Sailing)" award. And it surely unique when one is Admiral of the world's oldest yacht club, the Royal Cork at Crosshaven, in its Tricentenary Year, while the other is Commodore of the National YC in Dun Laoghaire as it marks its 150th Anniversary.
Yet both have shared an indomitable spirit in encouraging and leading their members in whatever sailing and club activity is possible through the COVID-19 crisis, and both, in turn, have seen their members support with a sense of responsible community which is a credit to both clubs, and to Irish sailing generally.

2020 Optimist Nationals
Optimist Nationals 2020 report
In a most unusual year for everyone and many sailing events being cancelled, it was fantastic to see the 2020 Optimist Nationals going ahead at the RCYC. With participant numbers being significantly reduced in order to comply with the strict Covid-19 protocols, we were fortunate that eight NYC Juniors qualified for entry across the three fleets - Clementine van Steenberge, Ava Ennis, Kate Flood, Caoilinn Geraghty-McDonnell, James Hall, Lizzie Hall, Maria Butler and Patrick Butler.
The event was sailed in mainly light airs with strong tides and a full series was sailed over the four days. Particular congratulations to Clementine (1st Senior Fleet Girl) and Caoilinn Geraghty-McDonnell (1st Junior Fleet overall) and Maria Butler (5th Regatta fleet) in her first Nationals.
All the participating NYC Juniors have been training throughout 2020 in the build-up to the event and we are so proud of all our Juniors for the effort and commitment they have shown.
To continue the NYCâs commitment to growing the Optimist Class fleet, there will be plenty of Winter coaching for all levels, details to follow shortly.
