Death Notice of Mr. Jack Owens

Death Notice of Mr. Jack Owens

Dear Members

It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the death of  long standing member of the NYC, Mr. Jack Owens.

The National Yacht Club has lost a great friend.

In the 70's when the Mermaid class was the biggest racing class in the Bay, Jack crewed with Johnnie Walker accumulating many trophies for the mantle piece. On the introductin of the new flying fifteen class Jack acquired himself a wooden fifteen later changing to a GRP boat. With over 25 years in the flying fifteen class Jack was also much involved with the running of the junior section. After hanging up his racing boots Jack involved himself with every sailing event at the National Yacht Club, was a regular DBSC volunteer and later becoming a Race Officer. His favourite event was to officiate at the annual Mermaid and flying fifteen forstbite series, the former classes he enjoyed so much.

Jack was an affiable, friendly and volunteer contrbutor and will be greatly missed by his club and wide circle of friends.

Interport 2018 Ruffian 23 Team Racing Challenge Ireland versus Hong Kong

Interport 2018 Ruffian 23 Team Racing Challenge Ireland versus Hong Kong

The 6th Interport Ruffian 23 challenge between Ireland and Hong Kong took place in Dun Laoghaire last weekend.

The 12-strong team of Ruffian sailors from RHKYC arrived in Dun Laoghaire on Thursday evening and joined the Irish sailors for post-DBSC racing drinks in the RStGYC.

The 1st Interport Ruffian challenge took place in 1993 in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Ruffian sailors coming to Dun Laoghaire the following year. The challenge was revitalised in 2009 when an Irish contingent travelled to Hong Kong.
Since then the event has occurred every 3 years with the Irish team travelling to Hong Kong again in
2015, and the Hong Kong team coming to Dun Laoghaire in 2012 and again this year.

Red Bull Flugtag 2018 Dun Laoghaire – Sunday 20th May

Red Bull Flugtag 2018 Dun Laoghaire – Sunday 20th May

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 6-metre high flight deck, in the hope of soaring into the wild blue yonder
or more often, to plunge into the waters below. Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship. These criteria have inspired flying tacos, prehistoric pterodactyls, and even Snoopy and the gang to grace the Flugtag flight decks!

In 2011, Dublin celebrated the momentous 100th anniversary of the Red Bull Flugtag series and we are bringing back the madness to the capital in May 2018. So mark your calendar and be ready for more flights, fun and foolery!

Clubhouse / Social Information:
Come and enjoy the spectacle from your Club's best vantage point! The BBQ will be in full swing from 1pm to 5pm and live music and kids entertainment as well!! All members, family friends welcome but Security will be on the door and gates so make sure you have you membership card for speedy entry!!

Please note there will be no parking outside the clubhouse from 6pm on Saturday night.

For further details on the event, including road closures, parking and public transport, refer to the official Flug Tag Event Guide HERE

On the water:
There will be an exclusion zone in the Carlisle Basin with 2 patrol RIBs from the Club to help channel the traffic...please follow their instructions at all time. Also, please do not bring your boat alongside the pontoons as masts or high cabins will inevitably impede the view of the show!
The Club launch service is not affected by the Flug Tag...however, there will be no renting of Club boats this weekend as they will be off site in storage to make room for tables and chairs.
