Mark O’Connor – Mini Transat Speaker Supper & Fundraiser

Mark O’Connor – Mini Transat Speaker Supper & Fundraiser

The National Yacht Club is proud to host NYC Member Mark O'Connor for an insightful presentation on the upcoming Mini Transat, "Race for Orbis," followed by a special fundraising dinner.

Wednesday 14th May @ 19.30pm

At 26 Years old, Mark is the skipper and founder of MOC Ocean racing. He graduated with a Masters of Electronic & Computer Engineering from University College Dublin, and has always showed a passion for sports and the sea. He moved to France in 2023 to realise his dream of racing across the Atlantic Ocean solo as part of the ‘Mini Transat’ race in 2025.

Since moving to “Sailing Valley”, he has gained over 10,000 kilometres (5,000 Nm) with the Mini 6.50 class and immersed himself in the offshore sailing industry. This has allowed him to gain invaluable experience. He precipitated in the ‘Monnoyeur Duo For a Job’ 2024 VendĂ©e Globe Campaign, preparing their IMOCA for the round the world race.

Most importantly Mark is passionate about his project and determined to make his dream a reality.

After 2 years of hrad work, he has now qualified for the 2025 edition of the Mini transat!

Mark has now partnered with Orbis Ireland to launch the campaign “Race for Orbis”

Orbis Ireland, an independent affiliate of Orbis, has set an ambitious goal: to eliminate avoidable blindness in Ethiopia. Focusing on a region of over 4.5 million people—where the prevalence of blinding diseases like trachoma is among the highest globally—Orbis Ireland is tackling the three leading causes of avoidable blindness: trachoma, cataracts, and refractive error. Through a combination of hands-on medical training, telemedicine, and partnerships with local health systems, Orbis builds sustainable eye care programs that put treatment within reach for all.

You can donate to Marks charity GoFundMe here, donations will also be taken on the night.

Join us for an evening of adventure, inspiration, and support for a great cause.

Quiz Update – Brains Of The Bay

Quiz Update – Brains Of The Bay

The boats are lifted out. Dark evenings confine the spirit. Sailors loosen the shrouds. And the blinds go down on the NYC like the drooping eyelids of a soon to be hibernating giant. Does anything stir through the short winter days and cold winter nights?

You bet it does! Anyone present at the NYC quiz nights from October through to March would feel the thumping heart of a giant that is racing inside. 22 teams. 11 quizzes. Over 1,300 competitors. About 600 questions. And a suspenseful, dramatic, and epic finale that brought the Brains of the Bay down to one, single, isolated, straightforward question. Could you answer it?

Well Patrick Madigan’s Corner Boys could. Going toe-to-toe with Páid Cassidy’s Wizard into the last night, both of these teams had a chance to be the winning-most team in the Quiz’s 40-year history. If either team won last Wednesday (26 March), then they would be the Brains of the Bay champions. At the end of evening, there were two teams tied for the lead – and it will not surprise you to learn that it was Wizard and the Corner Boys who made that tie. A tie that had to be broken. Four questions later, there was no give: still tied. 2-2 in the tiebreak. Last Question. One Question. One answer. One trophy. One Champion. And one place in history. A tremendous cheer of commiseration for the vanquished champions Wizard. A louder cheer of congratulations for the new champions Corner Boys. Even the Commodore got in on the act and presented the trophy (see pic). A late night. A great night. The beating heart of the sleeping club.

The giant stirs. Sailors appear on the yard. Spring kicks the hour forward. Soon, a swarm of insect-like boats will spew into the bay. One of them could perhaps yet be the youngest Olympic gold medallist.
