HONOURING RONAN BEIRNE AND ALL OUR PAST COMMODORES

Last Saturday (March 24th) the Club hosted a Farewell Dinner for outgoing Commodore Ronan Beirne and his family.

It was attended by a record 10 post Commodores and their families. 100 Club members supported the event, which was a full house.

The overall event was organized by Manager Tim O’Brien and his team. Splendid fare was prepared by Cormac Healy and his team.  Ian Meldon MCed the event, superbly, while incoming Commodore Martin McCarthy delivered the Toast and appreciation speech – recounting Ronan’s early days in Coliemore Harbour – and many sailing adventures since he joined The National YC as the cadet in 1970.

Ronan spoke of his tenure – and paid tribute to his Committee and other Club Volunteers who made its success possible. Ronan made special note of his highlight of the safe return of Club hero Annalise Murphy from her epic Volvo Ocean circumnavigation on “Turn the Tide on Plastic”.  Annalise attended on the night, taking a break from her Tokyo Olympics preparations on the 49er.

At the end of the evening, a presentation of a beautiful painting by local artist Robert Malcomson of the seafront in Maine was made to Ronan Berine, in appreciation of his tremendous service over many years to the National YC and especially his very successful tenure as Commodore.
